Brush Happiness

Make up brushes are so much more important to make up application than I ever knew.  I learned this once I started watching make up tutorials and videos on You Tube.  Who knew that the best way to apply liquid foundation is with a brush and not my fingers?

One of my favorite "vloggers" is EssieButton.  Check her out on You Tube and her webpage here.  Sometimes in the morning while I am doing my hair or make up, I prop my phone against the shelf and put on one of her tutorials to listen to.  She is down to earth and funny, and has great ideas.

She always refers to brushes by Real Techniques, which I can never find in any local store.  Until my niece Joelle told me about how she saw them at The Christmas Tree Shop!  I zipped there and picked these two from the rack, each one around $10.

So what's all the hype about these particular brushes?  Aren't they just like all the other ones out there?

There is just something fluffy and luxurious about some brushes.  The way the make up glides on and how the bristles feel against the face.  Real Techniques is a great line, but I also love the Sephora brand brushes, MAC brushes, and this really good drugstore brand that you can find at Rite Aid or Target called Ecotools.

This concealer brush by Ecotools has changed my life when it comes to concealer and covering up blemishes.  It works so well with my NARS radiant creamy concealer, I'm not sure I will ever change from that!

So EssieButton just recently did a tutorial on the Naked 3 palette, and she uses this product called Ambient Light by Hourglass.  See the video I am referring to here.

It's a finishing/setting powder that is just gorgeous.  I bought it from Sephora, and I have to say, it was super pricey!  (around $45) I was hesitant to spend so much on a finishing powder before trying it first, so I went in and had the stylist at Sephora try some on me first.  And wow, I loved it.  I get why EssieButton is making so much noise over it.

It's hard to tell in this photo, but it has light reflectors that add the perfect amount of natural looking highlight to the face so that it's not full out shimmering or dewey, but a nice in between.  I picked the shade Luminous Light which is a champagne pearl hue.  I do recommend going in and seeing which of the 5 shades you prefer in person as opposed to ordering this product online.

I use my Real Techniques powder or blush brush to apply it just above the cheek bones, above the brow bone, down the nose and just on the chin.

Until I learn how to do a video tutorial,  there are the stills for you!

It doesn't have to be such a fancy powder like Hourglass for you to add a lovely finishing look.  I think the brush matters more.  Try this technique with your setting powder and then some highlighter or shimmer!

Which brushes are your favorite?  Are you more likely to use a sponge or applicator, your fingers, or a brush to do most of your make up?

  1. I use the exact same brush to apply the Ambient Powder- too funny! It just gives the perfect finish to any makeup look. I would highly recommend trying out the RT Core Collection and the basic eye collection. You can find RT brushes at Ulta, the Bed Bath and Beyond on DW Highway in Nashua (I know not every BB&B has a beauty section like the one in Nashua does) and now at Wal-Mart! The brushes are made by one of the BEST of the best YouTuber's- Sam of Pixiwoo. If you haven't already, you have to subscibe to the Pixiwoo YT channel! Sam and her sister Nic are professional MUA's based out of London and they are magical. I have learned SO MUCH from both of them I cannot even begin to tell you! My other two favorite London based MUA's are Lisa Eldridge and Wayne Goss (who also has an AMAZING brush line available through Beautylish!! The foundation brush is a total MUST HAVE!). I could sit and watch their tutorials for hours on end. Something about their British accents combined with their techniques and ways of teaching are just second to none. The YouTube beauty community can be overwhelming but those three channels are the best of the best. Another one of my favorites that I know you would love is Emilynoel83... she feels like an old best friend! "Beautybroadcastexpress" is her second channel and is dedicated to quick reviews Monday-Friday, so informative!

  2. Forgot to mention- Sigma brushes are also fabulous and MUCH less expensive than MAC brushes... which are over-priced and just average in my opinion. Every MAC brush I've purchased has shedded like crazy and basically fallen apart after 2/3 washes. This has never happened with any of my other brushes. Although I do think the MAC 217 Blending Brush is an absolute must have for every eye-shadow application, the Sigma E25 is IDENTICAL, much less expensive and is just better quality overall. My other must have brush for liquid/cream/mouse foundation application is the Urban Decay Optical Blurring brush. I could go on and on about how incredible and game changing this brush is, but I won't ramble anymore. Just go get it, you will NOT be disappointed!
